Do NOT use oil-based materials such as crayons, oil-based paints or cheap colored pencils. There are lots of different ways to get your design onto the plastic sheets, but you need to make sure you are using the correct materials. The shapes will curl at the edges and settle down as they shrink. Label the type of plastic if you’re using more than one kind to avoid confusion. Store finished pieces in labeled containers, especially if you’re using them for jewelry-making or mixed media projects. Keep sheets flat in a file folder or plastic sleeve to prevent curling.
If you want to make an image that will shrink evenly, you will need a piece of plastic that has been stretched evenly. Decorate the circle and punch a small hole at the top before you place it in the oven. Since the polystyrene is clear, you can easily trace the image that you would like onto it by placing the clear sheet over the image and drawing on top. We ended up with 6 useless bits of curled plastic. Popped them in for a few minutes, They curled up tightly (except the starburst, which just got all rumpled) and turned white and didn’t shrink. If you really want reliable, consistent results, you’re best off using commercial Shrinky Dinks.

So I put them in for another 2 minutes and they were still curled. They had curled up, but that’s fairly normal early in the heating process. Once the oven had preheated, I put my plastic squares in for 2 minutes and then checked them. The same rules apply — place your artwork on parchment paper on the baking tray and ensure there is enough space between each piece for airflow. Always ensure children use non-toxic coloring materials and are informed not to eat the plastic. The materials used in Shrinky Dinks are non-toxic, and as long as they are handled properly, they pose minimal risks.

When I checked–they looked all curled up–but in different directions. For best results fold a piece of parchment in half and stick it inside, right by the fold of the parchment paper while you bake. And if you’re looking for more simple craft ideas, we’ve got lots. Then they will flatten out again. First, they will shrink and wrinkle up and get sort of curly! The ridges will flatten out in the oven.
Rounded corners are preferable since sharp points can curl up too much or break after shrinking. Always test your shrink ratio with a scrap piece if you’re unsure. Most shrinky dinks can be made by heating your shrink plastic sheet shrinky dinks in the oven, but we are using a heat gun for ours. Being neat is not important, as you will cut out the image and shrinking concentrates the colour. It’s best to use fairly light shades of pencils, as any colour you use will darken when you shrink the image.
